Description
This is not an extract but actual ground dried sumac leaf from the famous Rhus Corraria (literally ‘tanners sumac’) used for centuries to create soft, easily dyed leathers with extreme durability. It was the leather of choice for book binders because it will hold up for centuries in excellent condition whereas other tannins and tanning agents will react with molecules in the air to slowly degrade. It was also traditionally the tannin of choice for what was known as ‘fancy leathers’ because it tans the hides to a nearly white color that allows natural dye colors to be true, clear and strong.
Sumac leaf tannin is quite sustainable as the leaves are harvested year after year from the same groves. It is a pyragallol tannin, most typically used in softer leathers. For deer, goat or sheep hides you need 2-4 lbs. per hide depending on the size and thickness of the hide. Basic instructions on its use are included.

Always timely, and the product never disappoints!
Sumac arrived promptly and well packed. Haven’t had a chance to use it yet but I don’t doubt the quality. Thank you for a great source of natural tanning materials.
The tannins work great! I have been struggling with different methods to get supple rabbit furs, so I found this company by searching google. The sumac and mimosa tannin powder worked like a dream!
