Ammonium Sulphate

Price range: $2.50 through $39.00

Description

Ammonium Sulphate is a common fertilizer and a mildly acidic salt that can be used in place of vinegar to drop the pH of hides after liming or bucking before they are tanned. Ammonium Sulphate is extremely simple to use, virtually fool-proof, and can be safely disposed of on your lawn or garden. You can get Ammonium Sulphate locally, but it often has impurities that make it useless for tanning. One pound is enough for several hides.  While it is non-toxic it is not ‘natural’ nor allowed in certified organic tanning.

Simple fertilizer but at a fair price and not huge quantities. Will use to acidify hides.

Standard ammonium sulfate. Works well to neutralize the lime in bucked hides, I use this for hides made into buckskin to ensure that there is no swelling due to the lime. I have found that any lime swelling leads to stiff spots in the final product and a lot more rework to get the areas soft.
