Description
Chestnut extract comes from the wood of chestnut trees. It is a pyrogollol tannin, most typically used in moderately soft leathers, though it is found in a variety of recipes. It yields a color range between pale tan and brown. Use 1 lb. per deer sized hide for soft tanning, though 2 lbs. is more comfortable to work with. This particular extract is known as ‘sweetened chestnut’ as the pH has been raised for easier use. Basic instructions included.

Very beautiful and dark colors, the tannins smell lovely, and i wish i could drink this as a tea since it’s a heavenly flavor also.
Take longer than mimosa, yet not by very long. Maybe 3 weeks for a big thick elk, especially when i heat the tanning solution and add the hide back into….hot springs temp folks not boiling.

Verified ReviewThis was my first experience with chestnut extract and it made a beautiful chocolate colored leather. I tanned a deer hide and it was done after 7 days. The hide abraded well and softened easily. I will be doing more hides with this extract.
