Adding pH Indicator Solution to the cut cross section can show you whether or not the pH is consistent throughout — this one is not.
pH Indicator Solution
Cut off a small piece from the thickest part of your hide and apply this to the cross section to see whether the pH is consistent throughout the skin. When we first started using this, we were surprised to find out that our hides were often quite a different pH on the inside, and waiting until the pH was consistent throughout made a huge difference in the quality and consistency of our tanning. One bottle of this goes a very, very long ways.
