Buying Bark Tan

Buying real bark or veg tan is not entirely straightforward, because many tanneries and leather sellers that sell “vegetable tan” are actually selling hides that are tanned with a combination of tannins and other tanning chemicals such as chrome, glutaraldehyde or synthetic tannins. This is often not disclosed and the advertising is designed to make you feel that it is purely veg or bark tan, because you are less likely to buy it if you know about the other ingredients. The only way to be sure is to ask for a complete ingredient list. If they won’t provide it then it is very unlikely to be the real thing. We prefer the real stuff.

We produce genuine bark tanned hides using tan oak bark that we harvest ourselves. If you go to our shop (braintan.com/shop) you can see what we currently have available along with all ingredients and processing aids used in producing the hides.
