Description
By Matt Richards, 240 pages plus photos and illustrations.
Seven years of substantial improvements to the tanning process, woven into the easy to follow format of Deerskins into Buckskins. Deerskins into Buckskins is a step-by-step presentation of the simplest traditional method we know of to tan a hide. Most folks who have tried the tanning method in this book, now use it. Also features the most thorough chapters on using stone, bone and wood tools, history, science, hide glue, and garment construction.
A new 15 minute step that creates:
- Easier to soften Hides.
- Hides that come out super soft.
- Hides that take the dressing even when dry, which in turn:
- Removes the variability of trying to get the perfect moisture content before dressing.
- Makes it much easier to get complete brain penetration on thick hides, which makes tanning thicker hides such as moose, elk or even thick deer, way less work.
- Makes it so you can skip one of the wringing steps (which takes 15 minutes itself).
This step is such a great improvement that it has really motivated me to put out this new edition.
Other new key highlights include:
- Different skinning cuts for a better hide shape.
- How to tan Moose, Elk & Antelope.
- Bibliography (thorough and user-friendly).
- Important improvements to the Bucking process.
- Important improvements to the Dressing step-by-step, to ensure success for first timers.
- A step-by-step guide to varying this books’ Basic Method if you want to tan without the bucking step.

This book was really informative, good for every buckskinner, gave me some new things to try
This is a 5 star book, though I do have some complaints with it, and that is probably because I am simple, slow or stupid. I am not sure which. Maybe all 3! Mainly the section about bucking, and particular to do with using hardwood ash and water to buck. It didn't seem like the 2:1 ratio of ash to water(3 gallons ash plus 1 gallon for each additional hide) had enough water in it to submerge the 4 hides we have. Again simple like Forrest Gump, but he would probably figure it out and be the best hide tanner in world. Look how he put that m-16 together!
I know there are other great hide tanning books and videos out there, but this book should be on everyone's book shelf interested in tanning hides.
This book is easy to understand and is worded in a way that makes me feel confident in trying out these methods.
haven't cracked into it yet, but I'm excited!
Deerskins into Buckskins book review. When my first wilderness mentor had me tan my first hide (old, smelly cow), I experienced repulsion, fascination and an indescribably deep connection with my ancestors. Years and deerskins later, minus the gagging, I find myself still thick in it. Only now, thanks to this book (and more mentoring), I'm passing it on to my staff, who are passing it on to their students, who are passing it on to their families. It's not just a how to book - it's a doorway into deeper relationship with Creation and its Creator.
