Traditional Tanning: Leather and Furskin

$38.95

Description

By Lotta Rahme, 97 pages, color photos and illustrations, hardcover. This book contains sections on the history, methods and chemistry of traditional tanning. It also includes practical recipes using fish oil, rapeseed oil, bark and alum. It discusses the methods best suited for various animals from goat, to ostrich and moose. There is a lot of great information in here and you’ll learn a lot, but don’t expect the super thorough, step-by-step how-to style of our brain tanning books.

Pretty good resource. This book has lots of good information and has a variety of tanning processes including history, tooling and recipes. It also includes quite a bit of information about the Inuit which I found quite interesting. Would buy again!

An essential addition to a home tanner's library. Lotta covers veg tanning, oil tanning, alum tanning and even some historic forms I had never heard of. She explains the chemistry of each process and provides some procedures for the methods she has worked and information she has mined from other practitioners.

I bought the book because there is not much available on veg tanning. My hope was that this book would fill some gaps and help me understand my options to get started. Well the book fulfilled my expectations. This was a great purchase and I am excited to get started on some new home tanning options.

Excellent Book. Concise enough for a beginner to pic up and have their questions answered.
Enough technical information to be a go to reference manual for a journeyman, experimenting with skins/methods where there may not be a step by step guide on youtube.
