Gall nut extract yields the clearest (near zero color) tannin. Great for tanning fish and other skins that you want to maintain the natural color of the skin. Gall nut extract is also excellent as a base for natural dyes as it allows the dye color to be its strongest. 98% tannin!

If you want to learn to tan hides, this is the way to go! No need to travel all over the country for a hands-on class. Great communication before and after each class to make sure you know what to do ahead of time and recap what you've learned. Recordings of the video calls ensure that you can watch back the class instruction or catch-up if you are unavailable at class time. The perfect balance of information and "just-do-it." This class made it so simple to learn how to tan hides; I am confident and fully capable of tanning my own hides at home after taking this course.

I have been working with leather for over 20 years and this class made me fall in love all over again with leather. Matt is a wealth of information, and also quite entertaining! I honestly can’t believe how nice the leather we made came out. It far exceeded my expectations and I would recommend it to anyone interested in beginning tanning, or self taught tanner’s looking to level up their skill set.

Electronic Salinometer

Salinometers are used to test the amount of salt in a solution. You’ll use your salinometer to make sure you have enough salt in your pickling solution when tanning furs and hides with the hair on. It is very useful for accurate tanning and is of professional quality.

These are extremely easy to use. First, push the power button. There are a few ways to read salinity, but I prefer the percentage readout. Remove the cap from the bottom, put the electrode in your solution and read the screen. The electrode must be in the solution to get an accurate output (it changes as soon as you remove it). After use, rinse the electrode and put the cap back on.

What is particularly useful about an electronic salinometer vs. the traditional bobbing specific gravity kind is that the reading isn’t impacted by the tannin. This allows you to figure out how much salt is in your tannin, and then as a result, how much of the bk reading on your barkometer is tannin, vs. how much is salt.

Tara Pod Tannin Powder

Dried ground Tara pods that are wild harvested in Peru from native Caesalpinia Spinosa bushes that grow in the Andes on dry, poor soils are the cheapest source of ‘clear’ tannins to make white leathers, or to tan fish and other skins without adding any tannin color. Tara tannins have a very light natural color and they are used to obtain very clear leathers with good light and heat fastness. Light fastness means that it won’t darken with age, so the clear tannin color stays clear, and natural dyes stay true. Tara gives fullness and softness to leathers with a smooth and firm grain. Tara tannins also confer to leathers a grain cracking resistance that is higher than any other vegetable tanning agent.

We get this Tara directly from Peru allowing us to offer it at a great price. Compare to Dye houses that sell it for $30 a pound or more.

Tara is a gallo-tannin, most typically used in softer leathers. For deer, goat or sheep hides you need 2-4 lbs. per hide depending on the size and thickness of the hide. Guaranteed to be at least 52% tannin. Basic instructions on its use are included.
