Excellent New Book on Hide Tipis!

  • Larry Belitz has made 40 buffalo hide tipis from scratch (that’s a hell of a lot of work!) for museums and collectors, and is the world’s foremost expert on the subject.
  • Full of historical quotes and photos, as well as Larry’s expertise.
  • Covers everything from how the buffalo should be skinned, to how to sew them together with real sinew, decorate, set-up and use.
  • It covers brain tanning the buffalo, but I wouldn’t consider that part a thorough ‘how-to’. “The Buffalo Hide Tipi of the Sioux” beautifully weaves together historical quotes, photos, illustrations and Larry’s immense expertise to teach you about all aspects of the iconic buffalo hide tipi. When Larry started making hide tipis, it was truly a lost art. One that he
has rebuilt through museum research and the hard and meticulous work of building 40 of them himself (if you don’t tan, just to give you some idea of what this means: a typical 18 ft hide tipi has 14 buffalo hides in it, each of which takes a week worth of very physical work to tan. Then you sew them together, by hand, using sinews from the animal’s back, a task usually performed by 10 to 15 people working together). One of the things that most impresses me about this book is how much Larry uses the historical quotes to tell the story and then seamlessly adds his own expertise without the reader even really noticing. If you didn’t know who he was and what his experience and background is, you wouldn’t appreciate how much extremely specialized knowledge he was sharing with you…a lifetime’s worth of work. If you are interested in making one of your own, or just want a beautiful coffee table book that shares the great heritage of the buffalo hide tipi, I really recommend “The Buffalo Hide Tipi of the Sioux.” – Matt Richards
