This is a list of currently scheduled brain tanning classes. We highly recommend taking a class because the hands-on experience will really help you to learn this tactile craft. This list will be added to as various instructor's schedules become firm. There are many tanner's who teach custom classes. You can find out more about them in the Resource Directory. |

Dry Scrapte Tanning Workshop

Each student will have the opportunity to tan a deer skin from start to finish and keep the resulting product.
Class size is limited to insure each individual receives quality instruciton. All tools and materials are provided.
You will go home with the essential dry scrape tools (scraper & flesher), the knowledge needed to continue tanning
on your own, and a tanning guide to help refresh your memory. So far each student has also gone home with a
beautiful finished buckskin, a sense of accomplishment and a big smile.

Peoples of the North Primitive Skills Gathering will be an educational
celebration of the primitive and traditional lifeways of the north woods.
The gathering will feature five days of workshops, including brain tanning
taught by top instructors from around the region. While there will be some
crafted goods for sale or trade, the emphasis of the event is on teaching,
learning, and camaraderie. Topics of instruction will range from basic
north woods skills such as making fire by friction, to more expressive
arts like making and playing primitive and traditional musical
instruments. Costs $225

Earth Connection is a school of primitive skills and wilderness survival which offers weekend courses, for persons 18 and older. The are a licensed and insured business
in Fauquier County, located in Norther Virginia, and they offer outdoor classes throughout the year. Their hands-on classes are always kept small in size to ensure that
each student gets all of the attention and skills coaching that they deserve. Earth connection was founded in March of 1997 by Tim MacWelch.
Special Scheduling: If their 2006 schedule doesn't suit your small group schedule, they offer a limited number of private classes during weekdays (that's Monday through Friday,
sorry not weekends). You pick the class, or classes, and together with Earth Connection, you schedule the date. This special scheduling is for small groups of 3-10 people
depending on the class or classes selected, and is available in February, March, July, August, September and November of 2006.
